Challenge Descriptions:

  1. Container Bonanza – Large container search of 40 or more containers with a good number of hides.  Novice/Advanced have 4 minutes, Excellent/Masters have 3 minutes. One gold piece awarded for each hide found.
  1. Goldrush Exterior – Exterior search with large number of hides of varying difficulty.  Novice/Advanced have 4 minutes, Excellent/Masters have 3 minutes. One gold piece awarded for each hide found.
  1. Team Prospecting –Teams of three entered dogs/handlers, can consist of a mix of ability divisions.  Large exterior search.  Teams (team= one dog and handler) enter the search area, one at a time.  Team A finds one hide then exits the search area and Team B enters.  Once Team B finds a new hide and exits the search area, Team C enters to find the last hide.  Time stops once Team C calls the third hide or time allowed is reached.

Each Team Member must locate a previously uncalled hide. The official will indicate each correct alert (allowing for reward) and will signal that a dog’s run is done with a “Congratulations!” allowing the next member to leave the start cones. Dogs are to be rewarded at each successful alert, but their run isn’t complete until a previously unidentified hide is called.  Teams earn one gold piece for every hide found during the Prospecting Search. If all three hides are found, each of the team members receives three gold pieces. A Bonus gold piece will be awarded to members of the Three Dog Team with the fastest Prospecting Search time. Handlers can choose to form and identify their own three-dog team at check-in, or randomly be assigned to a team. Bye dogs will only be provided to fill in for the LAST team should it be necessary.

  • Pioneer Drive –Vehicle type search with multiple hides. Teams earn a gold piece for each hide found.  Novice/Advanced have 4 minutes, Excellent/Masters have 3 minutes. One gold piece awarded for each hide
  1. Greenhorns Welcome! –This search is designed to be an odor “warm-up” for experienced teams using Birch; participants who have never introduced their dog to nosework will run a scent searching game. One gold piece will be awarded to each participant.

The five Challenges will run concurrently, allowing participants to flow from one search to the next. At the conclusion of all their runs, handlers return to the check-in table. Gold pieces will be tallied and redeemed for drawing tickets. There are five drawings (one per Challenge). The dog with the most gold pieces from the Novice/Advanced and the Excellent/Masters divisions will receive a Super-Sniffer award. In the event of a tie, a card draw will determine the winner.
